Scleroderma is a chronic disease that affects your skin, connective tissue, and internal organs. This painful and incurable disease causes the immune system to make too much of the protein, collagen, an important part of your skin. As a result, skin gets thick and tight, and scars can form on the lungs and kidneys. Blood vessels may thicken and stop working the way they should, which leads to tissue damage and high blood pressure. Scleroderma isn’t contagious or infectious, but auto immune diseases can be hereditary and present in different ways from person to person. Some treatments can ease symptoms and slow the deteriorating effects of the disease, but the treatments themselves also cause many other discomforts.
This is a standard definition you can find on line, but my definition is:

When your own body fights against itself and literally self amputates your extremities, changes your appearance and causes chronic pain, medical definitions don't do it justice in terms of communicating how brutal it is.  It's as though we are being turned  into human statues. There are some positives like no wrinkels, and what I like to call, sclero j. lo glow skin! We may look "normal," but we are far from it, so many of us suffer in silence. But, we are warriors determined to win this battled being waged on our bodies.
